Up front, I'm biased. She's my wifey and I beta-ed this. It's like I'm its godmother.

[personal profile] eretria  has finished and posted a complete version of her Captain America: The Winter Soldier fic.

But it's good, okay, objectively, it's a damn good story about Steve Rogers going from the naive kid who thought going to war was something anyone sane would want to do to a deeply decent leader of men, along with being a painful period love story, and a tale of war and life in the military. If you don't want to cry for Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers by the end of reading it, you've had your tear ducts removed. I don't want to give away too much, but I have to warn for the fact, she wrote it for me and delved into all the painful aspects a lot of fic glosses over (because that stuff pleases my sadistic soul), but none of it is gratuitous.

If you read or mean to read, do heed the warnings and tags. If you read it, hold onto this, at the end, there is hope, like the first visible star of the evening.

She's been posting a chapter every other day and the whole thing is now up.

Oh, wow, and I almost forgot to say: there are some seriously steamy scenes between Bucky and Steve. [personal profile] eretria  does not cheat, though she doesn't include anything the story doesn't need.

And for those wondering about Peggy the Wonder Pup, she's got the terrible teenager twos going on, and a vet appointment tomorrow. Her wrestling nom de plume would definitely be The Wrecker, and she's hilarious. It's impossible to stay mad at a dog, who every time she's told 'bad dog' in anything approaching seriousness, immediately spins and bites her tail. She clearly thinks she can convince me it was all the tail's fault, the tail's idea, and only the tail did it. I might even fall for it, if she didn't do it around my leg. And the tail isn't the one pulling the desk drawer open to steal dog treats or the one who snagged the leftover Thanksgiving turkey off the counter and stole a mouse from my cat. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she starts opening the refrigerator next.

She's a great dog.

Less review than reaction, maybe, I'm not going to deconstruct and analyze the book in an academic fashion, but [info]mirabile_dictu expressed an interest when I mentioned reading it and between it and another book I'll mention I've had a thought float through my head.

Always )

Wow, that went long and veered off into personal land, but that's what I'm talking about: every book you read is personal to you.
