An interesting article about dating.
My favorite points --
Values vs Interests: Having the same values as your partner is truly a must. Its the glue that keeps you bonding, growing together and connected. Interests are different. For example if you VALUE a family, a belief in a higher being or power, or a fit and health conscious lifestyle your partner should equally believe these are significant in his/her own life. Interests like playing soccer, dance, rock climbing, fishing, fashion or shall I say YOGA, don’t determine compatibility. You don’t have to share every single interest with your partner to make it work. So true. I've been noticing on online dating sites that people go on and on about interests. Individuality within a Couple: WHO ARE YOU? Do you know what you desire? What are your dreams? Being an individual is probably one of the more difficult things to hang on to within a relationship. We can get lost in another’s own view and dreams. Staying true to our own desires and dreams is equally important. It makes us happier because we are living our desires and growing from that place. You can’t grow living to please another or gaining approval from another. You are then living another person’s life, and that eventually manifests into resentment, hurt and pain. I confess, I relied a lot on WG's advice when we were together. He had a knack for seeing straight to the heart of the matter (which holds true regardless of how he's treating me right now). It's fuzzy now how much of that meant he was steering the boat. Please STOP HIDING who you are! Be yourself, completely. From date one present your authentic self. If you don’t usually wear make up or dress a certain way, then don’t do it for the first date. If you don’t like sports than say so and don’t pretend to be the “sports chick or jock”. If you absolutely dislike smoking than don’t pretend to be ok with that habit in another if you really aren’t. What you are is what you are. Being proud of that is really the first lesson to learn before even attempting to find a date. Pretending to be someone you are not, is not only difficult to maintain but a lie you have to live. How fun is that? This is so tempting. I'm such a no-makeup, misplaced my comb a week ago kind of gal. But I'm thinking of trying out a different look, playing with a new hairstyle, wearing more makeup than I have been in school. But that's for me though, so I think it's not a pretense. Funny. I've never dated. Guys have always found me.

Ich habe 2046 ungelesene Mails in meiner Inbox, dieser Eintrag hier kann also gar nicht existieren, weil ich logischerweise gerade all meine E-Mails beantworte. *hust*
About a Gay-Sex Videogame This Christmas Season. Dragon Age: Origins has taken the terribly awkward genre of videogame dialog and melded it with gay romance and, also gay sex scenes. Who, in these United States, could possibly object to foisting this content on teenaged boys? Heh, heh.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'll find my dresses in one of the boxes, buried under some books.
I should never have listened to WG.
I was supposed to go to Seattle September 9th. I had the tickets and it was all set. We were going to go through all our things together and split them up. Take things to Goodwill. I was going to help him move. I was going to take him to his oral surgery appointment. I was going to put together furniture for him in his new apartment. I was going to spend some time with Monte kitty to say goodbye.
He called me and asked me not to come. He'd send me my things.
Why did I trust him?

I just discovered that WG kept both of my stretch velvet cocktail dresses, the deep blue one and the black one.
That's just beyond the pale.
He went through my stuff and just decided what he wanted to keep. Regardless of whose it was.

Word count: 507. AND THAT'S IT. I mean, I'll keep writing, and I'll certainly keep hoping this turns into a story, but no more posting word counts. Still, I did it! I wrote a minimum of 100 words/day for an entire month. Mini-nanowrimo was a good idea; it really helped me push on this idea I've had forever. Of course, as I said, I still don't know if it will become an actual story, and even if it does, only three people will read it because it's all about Teyla with minimal John/Rodney. But it was a good month. Also: whew!

Open Beta for the Archive of Our Own is entering its third week of booming growth, and we're all very excited by the positive, thoughtful, and constructive feedback we've been receiving from all of the new users. We've also been incredibly gratified by the groundswell of excited volunteers, eager to help us to make the Archive even better!
Happily, volunteer opportunities abound - particularly filling jobs in the infrastructure supporting the AO3. Organizing and communicating with our new volunteers is how our Volunteers & Recruiting Committee makes all our other work possible. Our Financial Committee makes sure the bills get paid, assuring a secure, stable home for all of that work. Both are vital to AO3 growth and sustainability.
If you're inspired by the AO3 project, and are moved to help us make it better, you may have just the sort of enthusiasm we can use! Volunteering in other capacities doesn't mean you can't also test code (banging on new features) or wrangle tags (helping to improve searchability) - many of us do both. Please take a look at the opportunities listed in our Willing to Serve post and help us to build stronger support for the AO3 by strengthening our organization. Send us a message to volunteer or to find out more!
As always, if you don't have the time or energy, but feel the impulse to be a part of what we're accomplishing, you can donate in support of our servers and our continued self-sufficiency - or just help spread the word to your friends and fannish communities!

Yup, still sick.
I'm sleeping in the second bedroom because I'm coughing a lot and also because...well you know those stupid stereotypes about how all guys turn into babies when they're sick? Yeah, that, only I'm not a guy. I whine a lot and the sad thing is that I know I do it and that doesn't stop me from doing it. Also my sleep schedule is really messed up.
So that's the state of me.
Meant to say, this seems to be a garden variety cold and not teh hamtrax.

*I have an invite to Archive of Our Own, if anybody needs one. Most of my non-Atlantis stories are loaded over there, and I plan to get the SGA ones up soon. I'm not sure what to do about drabbles and ficlets, though. I have a bunch, and the thought of creating header information for all of them individually is daunting. Any suggestions on how to handle this dilemma?
*Winnie has a new habit that I’m trying to curtail: chomping on my laptop power cord and killing my computer as a result. I've ordered a couple of replacement cords, but the quick death makes me aware that I really do need a new laptop. Does anyone have any specific recommendations? My computer needs are mostly web, music, photo editing, a bit of video tinkering, and word processing (no gaming). Are integral DVD burners standard these days?

Uh-oh.
My requestee for sga_santa requested a rarepair which I couldn't resist.
And it's ending up with a totally different rarepair in the final scene. Shit.
Any volunteers for a beta? I've been chopping at this fic rather ruthlessly trying to solve quite a few problems.

xposted to IJ and LJ
It's already afternoon in England, so let me post before it's too late: happy birthday to my beloved Lady of Asheru! I wish she didn't live so far away.
Every year for her birthday I write a little story, so here is this year's. It is not the most appropriate of birthday gifts, I don't think -- for one thing, it's set after a favorite character has died. Great. My dear non-LJ friend Linda has given me a new rule: no deaths when writing stories for gifts. I will try to keep that in mind in the future.
But this year, this is what it is.
Title: Survived Their Fall Fandom: SG1 and SGA Pairing: Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill; Rodney McKay/John Sheppard Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 2,525 Summary: Daniel spent a lot of time not looking at what he was packing because every object and every book reminded him of Jack and their years together.
A/N: For the Lady of Asheru on the occasion of her birthday.
Warning: Major character death.

Word count: 3,466. Thank god, only two more days in this month and I can knock off this word count shit. Although I must say, feeling obligated to post did keep my word count up, and I'm very proud of what I did today.
I got another email address, mirabile1dictu@gmail.com (note the "1" in the middle of Mirabile Dictu; that's because someone else has mirabile.dictu and mirabiledictu. Goddammit), so I could have a Google Wave account. Now, what does one do with a Google Wave account? Thanks to Winkingstar, I know a tiny bit more than I did; she linked to this two minute video explanation. Wave as a "hosted conversation" -- see, that makes sense to me.
I currently have 86 g-wave invitations, so if you want one, please email me: mirabile1dictu@gmail.com.

- recessional: Plagues in your Postapocalypse: - Disease is a huge part of any landscape except maybe our own. Disease in a landscape that used to look like our own should be even more shocking. -
- thelana: The Genius Wranglers: A Rant - Personally, I think the appeal of those relationships has very little to do with people yearning for an old fashioned woman supporting superior (genius!) man dynamic or people getting stuck on some Oedipal trope. I think it comes more from the side effects of the trope. The typical Wrangler personality, especially of this chiding mother sorts means that they are being cast with motivations other than just looking for hotness. -

So yeah, because my sleep schedule's been so fucked up, I haven't been taking my Wellbutrin. I really really need to remember that it's not optional.
Dinner tonight, which should have been dinner last night, was good, but it was only half of what I meant to serve and the meat was just a little too pink even though my meat thermometer said it was a lot more done that it turned out to be.* I really didn't feel the cooking vibe so we had the caramelized butternut squash/sweet potato dish (which was very good) and lamb, which was very good even if it was a little pink. We'll have greens and mashed potatoes tomorrow.
Things would have been a lot smoother if I'd been taking my meds, as it was I stressed this one waaaaaay too much.
*Um, hi...I'm really not in the mood for recommendations or helpful hints or solutions or whatever here.

I've been reading a slash story in which a heated argument between the couple (who are also friends) results in punch being thrown, and then the one punched actually finds the aggression a turn on and it goes on to sex. Somehow this combination of sex and violence doesn't work for me at all, not even in fiction, where I'm not averse to combinations of sex and violence.
Like, I can go along fine if the aggression is against some kind of third party, and one character is turned on by the other being violent, or they are turned on mutually, say if they are both in a barfight or even slaughter others. I can also go along with non-con that involves violence with the victim not being turned on, but I as a reader like it. But if the violence is between the couple (and they are supposed to like each other), uncontrolled violence segueing into sex (rather than say rough sex that is mutually agreed upon) is squicky for me, more so if the violence is not mutual (the latter would be more fighting leading to fucking in some kind of hate sex, which I also don't like, but it is not as bad as one sided violence).
Most often this is shown from the POV of the character the aggression is turned upon rather than the violent character being turned on by the escalation, i.e. A hits B, usually after some provocation, then B somehow finds that aggression/violence (or sometimes the loss of control) hot, and sex follows. I have to admit that I find this particular combination of sex and violence to be surprising as a kink, and it always startles me, but I see this every now and then, and I'm wondering whether it is something that many people like in sex scenes.
So, a poll:
