Yuletide progress

Wheee!

I rewatched my source material today and used it to add a few details here and there to my story. I've got 9028 words and expect to finish the first draft this weekend. I'm lucky I was able to use a story idea I already had and work it together with the request.

I know, I have this freakish love/hate relationship with deadlines. They make me crazy, but they make me write steadily, every day, and they also give me this great whooop of relief when I know I've succeeded ahead of time.

And I will get right back to work of GT&T once I've finished with the Yuletide story and get the next part out before New Year's. I swear. I can write on one thing and revise on another, I've discovered.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/230328.html. where there are comments.
feeling stupid question for SGA Big Bangers

Could anyone remind me when the writers and artists are free to post their work outside the Big Bang site? I just noticed one of the stories reposted at the Pit of Voles.

ETA The release date was/is 11/27.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/229963.html. where there are comments.
Peeved is Peevish

Andy Rooney voice:

You know what annoys me?

A story with no email for feedback, just a journal to comment in.

I read a story I really very much liked, but I also wanted to discuss the ways it didn't work for me, and so I thought: I'll send the feedback in an email. Only there was no email addy. So I tried the writer's livejournal profile. No email. Tried her story site and the stories there. No email. A journalfen link for replying, but see, if I wanted this feedback public I'd have already left it at the feedback post.

And now I'm annoyed and not in the mood to feedback at all in any form.

Too bad, because there was a lot about the story I wanted to praise.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/229741.html. where there are comments.
SGA fic: Know How to Fall :: AU :: Big Bang :: complete

It only took three days to occur to me that I could (ought even) post the link to my Big Bang story on my journals. I am so slow I'm moving backward in time.

Yuletide story idea has been hatched, however, complete with thinky theme. Minimum of ten thousand words to even hit the high points. So I'll need to get cracking.

But back to what has been written.

Here is where you can read Know How to Fall.

(Which I consider to be an Equestrian AU slash Harlequin, if that helps. I suppose it might hurt too.)

An SGC oopsie snippet

The rest of SG=[team number redacted] wandered back to the gate eventually after no one showed up after the gate dialed in. They looked around the clearing before shrugging.

"What do you figure?"

"Wrong number?"

"Bad autodial?"

"Didn't like the neighborhood? This planet is dead boring."

"Who cares? No one's shooting at us."

"Hey, wasn't Bamber on watch here?"

"Uh, the new guy? Yeah."

"I don't see him."

The officer in charge tried his radio. No answer.

"Ah, crap."

"What?"

"Aren't those his boots in front of the stargate?"

"Sonova -- Didn't somebody tell him to get out of the way when the gate dials in?"

"I guess not."

"Now I've got to explain losing another newbie in my report. What do you figure I should say this time? Ori soldiers, cannibal natives or rogue Jaffa?"

"Mix and match, sir. I don't think anyone's used cannibal Jaffa yet."

"Good idea. Well, I guess it's time to dial home. Someone toss his boots into the whoosh."

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/228984.html. where there are comments.
::cries in frustration::

It's five o'clock and I still haven't had a chance to even start reading even one Big Bang fic.

There was an unfortunate turkey incident, you see, that necessitating cleaning the entire stove. (I had to cook the bird - I bought it because it was on sale then remembered there was no room in the freezer.)

Tip: cooking and writing, not actually a good mix.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/228512.html. where there are comments.
::glee::

SGA Big Bang is live!

The Art! The Stories! It's all there!

I should probably rush out and buy a lottery ticket.

Or, god, go to bed. I think I wrote another four thousand words on the sesa revision today. I write a paragraph and realize, no, that has to be an entire scene, or it reads like an outline. This is not the time to stay up all night reading.

Okay, I'm just going to look at the art for my story.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/228346.html. where there are comments.
Dear Yuletide Writer

Dear Yuletide Writer,

I hope I get this right and if my prompts were too vague to be helpful this will serve instead (and if my prompts were too detailed, just, you know, pick and choose what inspires you).

I'm an equal opportunity fan of slash and gen or even het if that's what fits the fandom, and while I kept my character picks down to one or two or three, if there are other characters in the fandom you feel are needed in the main focus to make a story work, don't hesitate.

I love plotty stories, action, and clever dialogue and banter, but equally, character insights, deep and abiding friendships, dark pasts coming back to force personal revelations, characters being driven to cross the line - and not retreating back afterward, 'going rogue' tropes, family-by-choice, world-building, established relationships and first-times, outsider POV, characters undercover in serious or crazy situations, angst, dark themes, and trust issues.

Sex in the story is totally about whether it helps the story, so I'm as happy with a Dick Francis' style fade-to-black as a melt-your-bones hot encounter told in every detail.

I'm not terribly fond of stories about pregnant characters (female or male), kidfic, heavy kink, permanent mutilation of a character (but go ahead and kill them, deathfic I'm dandy with; I know, consistent I'm not), or second person narration. Some shows and books call out for crack and humor and I enjoy both, but don't really want them in these fandoms.

Just, have fun with whatever you write, because that always comes through, and I'll be sure to happy with it.

More detail, you ask?

Lewis

I asked for DI Robert Lewis and DS James Hathaway, and said: An interesting case, the friendship between Hathaway and Lewis or something that reveals more about Hathaway's past or sexuality are all great.

Here's where I'd love either a glimpse into Hathaway's head or equally an outsider's (or Innocent or Hobson) pov on Hathaway and Lewis friendship. Back story for Hathaway, maybe the events that led him from the seminary to the police force. Future fic, because Morse mentored Lewis, now Lewis mentors Hathaway, and eventually Hathaway will move up and continue the tradition. Crossovers with other British police procedural series would be another option. Oh, even a mad, whimsical Monty Python episode in their lives would be fun.

Roger Zelazny - Chronicles of Amber series

I asked for Corwin or Deirdre or Fiona or Merlin and said: Corwin in the shadows from the Pattern he made or back in Amber after escaping the Courts of Chaos or what kind of relationship did he really have with Dierdre? Just about anything from angst to humor to slash would be great.

To be a little more detailed, I long for Zelazny's prototypical wiseass first-person narration, the very cynical heroics, and the interaction between any of the scions of Amber, because they're so long-lived. I've always wondered if creating a new pattern meant Corwin would end as mad as Dworkin, too. Corwin and Fiona just talking would interest me. And even though Dierdre is dead in canon, things are always questionable enough that you could bring her back to life somehow.

First Monday

I asked for Julian Lodge and said: Life after the clerkship with the Supreme Court or a crossover or slashy romance or something brilliant and unique. Go wild.

Probably out of the question to hope for a fantastic court case mixed with Julian's every day life. (Lately, I've been enjoying The Good Wife, if that gives you any kind of clue.) I just want a deeper look at Julian. I'm shallow like that, he's what I loved about the show.

Jocelin Foxe - The Wild Hunt

I asked for Alesander/Payne/Reynard and said: Slash or action or how another of them escape the Hunt.

Basically I would be thrilled by any damn thing set in this series, because I wanted more and never got it. Back story, future story, a glimpse of the Wild Hunt through an outsider's POV or someone new brought into the hunt. Original characters don't scare me either.

I really don't want to dictate what you write; I want to be surprised and know that, if you have fun writing one of these, I'll have fun reading it.

Thank you,
Auburn

sga big bang is coming!

Tomorrow as far as I know. ::glee!::

Which means that, yes, I have finally posted my preview for my Big Bang story, Know How to Fall. You might find it interesting or at least want to snag the soundtrack.

It's here: Preview

Meanwhile, I'm neck deep and thrashing my way through major secret santa story revisions. Why must betas always be right? ::makes pitiful sounds of self-pity::
GT&T progress

Four thousand words on GT&T! I have the Satedan mutiny to write now and I have decided, with the backing of a poll I offered a while back: Melena will live.

Has the entire SGA fandom gone eerily silent in the last few days or is it just me? Is everyone busy writing?

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/227512.html. where there are comments.
SGA santa story first draft finished.

Went ahead and signed up for Yuletide. ::twitches:: Offered only to write for media I am very, very familiar with and not intimidated by writing.

Asked for some semi-obscure things and one fandom I didn't think anyone had ever heard about or knew except myself until I saw it listed.

And wow, got my copy of my sign up already. Okay. Deep breath. Thanks to few I didn't make any mistakes.

Yay.

Will go collapse now.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/227247.html. where there are comments.
yuletide! and meandering

Currently ahemming the pilot of White Collar. If this turns out to be my next fandom, I predict the local Starbucks will get used to me showing up to use their faster wifi.

Contemplating the Yuletide sign ups. I can do a thousand words in a day. Of course, not a thousand words that finish a story, but we'll ignore that niggling little inconvenience. few has written me a how to sign up post here; if you're a newbie like me, take a gander.

I think I'll have the first draft of the sga secret santa story done by the weekend. I broke 10,000 words last night and have thrown out all the parts that aren't from John's pov, so it's on the down hill slide. No more action to speak of, just two emotional denouements and the sex scene. Hope no one thinks I'm bashing Mitchell or Keller in this, because I most certainly don't mean to do that. I see it as a no fault situation, with no one meaning to hurt anyone ele.

Circling back to Yuletide, I mean to take my time making my decisions before I officially sign up. No use piling on in the first few hours and breaking it, after all.

...

Poking around the internets, I found the kind of diabetic socks my dad likes and ordered him some. Gah. 70+ bucks for socks! For that they ought to do their own laundry. But they'll make Dad and his feet happy and more comfortable.

***

Huh. Do not like the Starbucks on the other side of town, but this one is pretty handy and much quieter. And the brownies are tasty.

Hell and damnation, I've succumbed!

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/226308.html. where there are comments.
SG peeU

Whenever I think I might possibly someday subject my brain cells to SGU, I run across something that snaps me back to sanity.

Just trying to stick to canon, I was checking for a planetary/stargate designation for the Icarus planet (ridiculous nomenclature, grr). What do I find? Oh, it's supposed to be 21 light years from Earth.

Gliese 581 C is located 20.5 light years from Earth orbiting a red dwarf star. We know about it. Go ahead. Google it. I did. I googled 'closest planets to Earth in light years.'

Yet supposedly the SGC, which has FTL capable space ships searched for this planet for years? Don't get me started on the 'radioactive core'. How hard could it be to do five minutes of basic research and get an idea of interstellar distance and not stick their distant planet in our stellar backyard?

Well, it's not like I thought TPTB wining and dining John Scalzi into letting them call him a consultant meant the science on SGU would be better, but jeez, it's more like they're going out of their way to choose the stupidest options every time.

And that displays not just a disdain for the old school fans, but even for the new demographic they're trying to court. In fact, it displays the sort of contempt for their own art and product that I remember permanently turning me off of Alias during its third season.

Screw it. I'm taking their crappy bad canon and twisting it into something that at least makes sense for my story. And SGU wins today's fail prize without me ever having watched an episode.

SGA secret santa story is cooking along. I'm averaging something like 2300 words a day on it. Half way done. It's invigorating to work on things I'll be able to post. Once it is done, I'll go back to part four of GT&T and try to finish it before the end of the year, maybe fit in something from the Green Sea 'verse and then the Criminal Minds apocafic. And then get back to the original novel I started last January.

Hi, I'm Auburn and I'm a deadline addict. But it has to be outside deadlines. The ones I set for myself -- like finishing the novel? -- have no force. It takes anxiety to motivate me.

Only ten or so days until SGA Big Bang goes live. Apparently there was a sign up to pick a day to post a teaser, but I must have been out of town (or just out of my mind) because I missed it at the time. I'm really, really looking forward to the artwork for my story, anyway. ::cross fingers::

So tempting, so crazy, 'cause I love me the end of the world: apocabigbang!

Ten thousand word minimum, any fandom, not due until February, apocafic!

Apocabigbang

Also, all you great writers reading this (why are you reading this and not writing me fic?) should check it out.

I wanna sign up so much. I love apocafic, pro and fan, like a burning, burning, burning thing.

But would anyone want to read a Criminal Minds apocafic? I have a genuinely cool idea that isn't supernatural, isn't zombies, and isn't nuclear war (though it might escalate) for the collapse of civilization.

Peoples! Talk me down from signing up for this! (Or egg me on, because you realize now that there is no way for your life to be complete without a Criminal Minds apocafic.)

BTW - home, internets, I missed you. Though I really wish my dad had been feeling better before I had to leave.
I disturb myself

Thing One.

Hard at work on the Secret Santa story and what am I writing?

Coerced consent.

What else can you call saying yes to sex to pay a self-perceived debt, to keep from escalating into a fight, to have something you wanted from someone who never wanted to give it to you before, even though for them it's all about punishment?

That's the only way I can think to describe it. I don't think it's quite dubious consent, but it's, uhm, squicky/skeevy by my standards. At best I'd describe it as drunk, angry, really rough sex with undertones of humiliation and submission kinks. It's John agreeing to sex out of guilt and then coming to Rodney carelessly hurting him, or maybe despite it (that's the best interpretation). And yet, I wrote it as hot as I know how. ~2500 words of it. Which is the disturbing thing.

Then there's the fact this is supposed to be in a Christmas exchange fic.

I've got to inflict this on someone so they can tell me I can still make John and Rodney work as a happy ending after this, because I suspect I can't.

::facepalm::
Thing Two appears to have been frightened away by the contents of my brain.

Balls

Secret santa assignment.

Anyone else open their assignment email, read it and just think, oh, this is going to suck? Because mine makes me think whatever I come up with is going to suck big time, suck to write, suck as a story and suck for the poor person that requested this in all innocence. I'm going to have to go to the secondary, even tertiary request level to come up with something. That makes me feel rather guilty, because I like to come up with something that really fits what someone wants, but like the song says, I won't do that. Even if I tried, it would suck balls. Bowling balls. Basket balls. Bucky balls. Schwetty Balls.

To be clear, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the request, it isn't one of those that make you want to shake the person, it is just something I have no interest in writing about, never have, never will.

I suppose it could be worse. It could be Beckett. Or <strike>Barfy </strike>Sparky.

And the cat broke the seven off my laptop keyboard in a feat of vandalism I still am steaming over. My barely six months old laptop that I keep as pristine as possible. I suspect it was deliberate retaliation for the ear mite medicine and I'm thinking next time I'm letting the little bastard kick his own head in.

My poor precious. It looks like some knocked out a front tooth.

BTW the worst thing about my Toshiba Satellite is how easily the damn keys come off. I've already had to fix two, but Savage managed to break the little plastic clip that snaps them in place, so this isn't an easy fix like before.
free snippets - prompt me

Because I'm at loose ends but don't want to work on GT&T IV, I give you leave to ask for snippets. I'll write you something in comments from 100 to 1000 words, if you give me a prompt.*

A character, a noun, a verb
Five things__________(fill in the blank)
A quote (results may vary widely)
A picture.

It's twelve-thirty-eight pm my time, I'll stop taking prompts at twelve-thirty-right am. Otherwise, I'm going to sit here and draft and cast a proposed Criminal Minds spin-off starring Joe Flanigan as a gay FBI profiler. Which isn't that bad a fate, come to think of it. If you don't have any prompts for me, you can suggest names for said gay FBI profiler.

Fandoms I have some familiarity with: SGA, SG1, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Alias, Due South, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Magnificent Seven.

I don't take part in Yuletide (don't even know how a novice would sign up), so I can't really mourn that no one nominated Inspector Lewis (though Inspector Morse might conceivably include Lewis), but I'm still surprised. Sgt. Hathaway couldn't be better slash fodder if a fan herself had created him. Maybe Lewis is too rare even for Yuletide?

Anyway, here's a rec for an Inspector Lewis fic:

Five Things Morse Taught Lewis and One He Did Not

Forty-three SGA Big Bang stories were submitted. This is SGA Big Bang's last year (at least in this format) and I'm going to miss it terribly, from a writing and reading viewpoint. But right now, I cannot wait for November 12 to roll around. I want to read and see the art. Especially (I'm a self-involved bitch, it's true) the art for my story!

*If a snippet gets away from me (they do sometimes, see Ardhanarishvara and In the City of Seven Walls, wait dear God, why am I doing this again?) I may post it to Dreamwidth rather than the journal the prompt came from, but I'll link it at the originating journal in that case. It's highly unlikely I'll write anything long enough to need the longer comment length available to me at DW, though.

it's done!

Submitted my final version of my SGA Big Bang story. Did it wrong the first time and found myself panicking and jerking out the internet line to stop it from uploading. Yeesh. Second try, I think I got it right. Crossed fingers. It's all out of my hands now.

Just like the pan of brownies I made to celebrate.

As I pulled the pan out of the oven, my mitt slipped and I managed to flip the pan right over. Honestly, my brownies always stick. Except this time. Brownies, meet floor. Floor brownies, meet dog. I know, chocolate is bad for dogs, but she doesn't seem to care much. And they smelled so good. It's finally raining here and I felt like baking for first time in ages. Drat it.

I wonder what would happen if I tried to make popcorn?

A lightning strike?

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/224441.html. where there are comments.
Things wot I'm not writing and things wot I want to read

Things I want to read:

John/Vala
John/Sam
John/Jennifer/Rodney
John/Chaya
John/Larrin

What? I've got a het yen of late. And I really want to see John with someone who will make him happy. EATG left me bitter on his behalf. And I always want to read really good McKay/Sheppard, that's a given.

Things I want to read, per a DW comment thread between monanotlisa and myself:

Where is the Kanaan fic? Where's the Teyla/Kanaan fic and where's the Teyla/Kanaan/Ronon and where's the Teyla/Kanaan/John fic?

monanotlisa : You're right about the lack of Teyla/Kanaan/Ronon. Weird, seeing as fandom's usually over minor male characters. Although it helps when they're WHITE. *eyebrow*

And I think she's right. Which makes me mad at all of us, including myself. Kanaan should not be a rare pairing character when he is canonically involved with a main character.

Moving on to the things I'm not going to write.

The one where John and Teyla were involved since season one and Torren is his son, but he called it off after finding out she was technically already married to Kanaan. Should end up as a threesome. Sigh. Anyone want this one? Free to a good <strike>home </strike>writer.

The one where Rodney really isn't as oblivious as he acts, because Elizabeth figured out that John had a thing for him in the first year and briefed him on how to keep John from ever declaring anything while at the same time keeping him strung along, because they couldn't afford to have their military commander go off the rails or end up on the outs with Rodney after being rejected. John finds out from some private papers of Elizabeth's...It's just too cruel.

The one where John really is a cockblocking sonovabitch and seduces Jennifer away from Rodney, either because it's a nasty joke or because he thinks she'll make Rodney unhappy if they marry.

The one where John confesses his love for Rodney, they get together, but Rodney goes back to Jennifer because he just really wants women more than men.

The one where Rodney doesn't leave John for a woman, but cheats on him.

These prove I have a deep and abiding sadistic streak.
You might get something just as fantastic. But you can't get if you don't give.

Come on. McShep Match is over. Everyone is turning their Big Bang stories in today. What's life without a deadline?

You don't need to be on LJ to sign up, either.

SGA Santa 2009

Err, why yes, I did submit both my Big Bang and my fanzine story in the last couple of days. I may be a little giddy.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/223951.html. where there are comments.
like a crime scene tech's wet dream

bad enough i'm having a period that resembles internal hemorrhaging, but every time i cough hard i pop a nose bleed. not trickled either, but a real choke on it if i tip my head back bleed. i keep cleaning up blood spray and spatter. looks like something got killed in here. it's under my fingernails and on my clothes. towels. sheets. it's probably on the cats. at this rate, i'll sneeze at the wrong moment and it'll end up in my dinner.

tmi.

gross, definitely.

but it is enough to make me laugh in contempt at all the csi shows where one tiny blood fleck proves somebody is the murderer. they write these shows like people don't bleed all the time. finding a blood stain in a home is probably as common as finding fecal matter in a toilet.

This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/223567.html. where there are comments.
